This was nerve wracking! Thank God I don’t plan to catch a flight in the next few weeks/months cause after reading Falling (and Hostage last month) I’m not sure I like the idea of flying so much now.
Falling was an edge of your seat kind of thriller. The first line alone “When the shoe dropped into her lap the foot was still in it” made me already queasy and from that moment on knew I was in for a very bumpy ride.
Captain Bill Hoffman’s family has been kidnapped and he’s faced with an impossible dilemma: crash your plane with 143 passengers onboard or your family will die. His first answer is “I’m not going to crash this plane and you’re not gonna kill my family”, but that may prove a bit difficult once some nasty surprises are revealed.
As the story progresses we follow the situation with Bill’s family and their kidnapper, the one in the cockpit and that with the cabin crew while they prepare for an eventual attack. (the flight attendants were my favorite characters).
Falling reads like a movie (in my case I listened to the audiobook and it was like being in that plane in real time). It’s been written by a former flight attendant and it shows. It felt pretty authentic!
My only critique is that some characters were a bit too much of a stereotype and some situations (particularly one near the end) felt a bit too unrealistic.
Popcorn thriller (that’s a compliment in my book) that you will devour in the few hours it took Flight 416 to go from L.A. to… I guess you’ll have to read it to find out.
