What happens when you mix 1 (accidental) murder with 2 thousand wedding guests and then toss in a possible curse on 3 generations of an immigrant Chinese-Indonesian family? That you get one of the funniest books I’ve read in a long time. I always love when murder mysteries are mixed with humor so this was one of my most anticipated reads of the year and it did not disappoint at all. I absolutely loved every single moment I spent with the Chan family.
This book was Hilarios! Meddy was a great character but her mom and aunties stole the show. If forced to choose one of the aunties I don’t know if I would be able to choose. It would be like asking which limb you’d prefer to get cut off! All their witty banter was a delight to read and it was so nice to learn all their traditions and culture.
I loved the strong sense of family all throughout the story and how the aunties were there for Meddy every single time no questions asked. I really felt for Meddy and her dilemma between going away to live her life and her duty to stay and help her family.
Was the plot completely over the top? Absolutely! And that’s why this was such a fantastic read. If you go for it, GO FOR IT! The chaos and mayhem around the wedding and the hiding of the body delivered several laugh out low moments (I will never eat eggplant again without thinking of the aunties).
I read the paperback but I can’t help to think that the audiobook version must be an absolute hoot, so I may have to listen to it too.
I was ecstatic when I reached the end and found out there will be a sequel…and a Netflix movie!
If you’re in the mood for some craziness you can’t go wrong with Dial A for aunties. I know they’re already on my speed dial!
