Cat Winthorpe has worked hard to get what she has: a gorgeous home; social standing; and William, her successful, handsome husband. Then a friendly new couple moves into the estate next door. While cautious, a good neighbor like Cat greets them with open arms and warm hospitality.
Neena Ryder isn’t a fellow lady of leisure. A life coach with off-the-rack dresses, personal issues, and a husband who hasn’t delivered, she’s anxious to move up in the world. This beautiful new town is a step in the right direction. It’s also making Neena aware of what she doesn’t have. Namely, William. When Neena’s infatuation escalates into obsession, it’s just a matter of eliminating a few obstacles to get the life she wants. The life next door.
As Neena’s secret fixation grows, so does her friendship with Cat. But beneath their cordial interactions is a wealth of temptations, secrets, and toxic jealousy. For both women, the desire for a perfect life can turn perfectly dangerous.

REVIEW
RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"I had made the horrible assumption that I was the smartest person in this game"
This was truly and absolutely UNPUTDOWNABLE! It was my first A.R. Torre and now I can't wait to go and check her other works.
Cat is married to William. They're filthy rich and so in love. Neena is married to Matt and though he absolutely adores her, she thinks he's not enough for her so she sets her eyes on her new boss and neighbor, William. But Cat is not willing to let anyone ruin her marriage so, LET THE GAME BEGIN!
That's how you write a psychological suspense! From the prologue I knew this was gonna be a winner in my book. Imagine yourself being interrogated by the police and your main worry be to be addressed as Dr. instead of Mrs. You just gotta love Neena! (not really).
Neena and Cat are those kind of people you wouldn't want in your life in a million years, but reading about their games and vendettas against each other was so much fun. Neither of them was specially likable, but I had my favorite in this Cat and mouse game.
Although the plot was not the most original one and it soon was clear where the story was going, the writing, the pacing and two very well developed leading ladies made of "Every last secret" a super engaging read. This morning I woke up two hours before the alarm went off and instead of going back to sleep I decided I needed to go back to reading. To sacrifice two hours of sleep for a book gives you an idea of how much I was enjoying this.
The only critique I'd make would be the epilogue, as it did not feel consistent with the rest of the story (exact same problem I had with "Too good to be true").
Absolutely recommended it!
I loved this one too! It was so addictive. There is just something about women playing that revenge game, isn't there? They were both despicable, but you couldn't help rooting for Cat...or at least I couldn't.
ReplyDeleteRead Black Lies next. I really need to read it again. I read it years ago, but I rated it 5 stars, and I remember it shocking the hell out of me. Lol I've really liked most of her books.
Great review, Javier!
Thank you, Bridgett! Women playing the revenge game must be my favorite subgenre in the thriller/mystery one! Everyone told me to read "The Ghostwriter". I hadn't even heard about "Black Lies", but I trust your opinion so I may give it chance, sometime. LOL
