SYNOPSIS
Four years ago, I lied. I stood in front of the police, my friends and family, and made up a story, my best one yet. And all of them believed me.
I wasn't surprised. Telling stories is what made me famous. Fifteen bestsellers. Millions of fans. Fame and fortune.
Now, I have one last story to write. It'll be my best one yet, with a jaw-dropping twist that will leave the nation stunned and gasping for breath.
They say that sticks and stones will break your bones, but this story? It will be the one that kills me.

REVIEW
RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Having read and loved a few weeks back "Every last secret" I knew I had to read some of the author's previous work. "The Ghostwriter" was the chosen one and it managed to confirm my suspicious that A.R. Torre and I are a good fit.
I started listening the audiobook version but I could not connect the narrator's voice with the one I had created in my head for Helena based on her current situation. I thought it too youngish and cheery for such a dark character, so I went to the Kindle version and I'm so glad I did, cause it worked so much better for me. This was not, for sure, a cheery story.
The beginning was so strong I immediately was enthralled by Helena and her weirdness. While she could come as unsympathetic, I could only attribute her sarcasm and sharp answers to her vulnerability and the pain (not only physical) she was carrying. I loved how her relationship with the ghostwriter evolved and how after a pretty horrible start they managed to care for and respect each other.
I thought the middle part was a bit drawn out, but that might just be my impatient self wanting to finally find out Helena's secret. Also, the calf birth? Cute but weird!
Once the story centered on the book they were writing things picked up again, and that's when I could not stop turning the pages. While at first I could not even guess what had happened to her, as the story progressed I started thinking "what if Simon...", and as her tale was proving me right I could not help but to shout at my Kindle "no, no, no!". But no matter how much I shouted, IT happened and my heart was broken into a million pieces. And if that hadn't been enough, those last letters were the final nail in my misery coffin. Such an emotional ending.
Very well written story with a quite unforgettable main character I'm sure to remember in the months to come.
