REVIEW
RATING: ⭐⭐⭐
I was talking the other day about Good Rich People with my friend Kim when I realized there’s a Spanish saying that fits this story perfectly. It says “cuando el diablo se aburre mata moscas con el rabo” which literally translates as “when the devil is bored he kills flies with his tail”, and that’s exactly what these good rich and horrible people do! They are the kind of people who have everything and don’t have to work for anything in their lives so they need something to spice them up.
I gotta say I loved it at first. Lyla was such a heinous person that it was mesmerizing listening to her thoughts and views on the world. Some (most) of her observations were so outrageous that they worked as a perfect critique to those thinking like her. I was immediately engrossed in her messy life, her relationship with her husband and mother-in-law and that weird game they had going on.
It was when Demi’s part began that it all became much more predictable. I didn’t find her voice as interesting as Lyla’s. Once you realize who Demi is, it wasn’t hard to guess where the story was going. She wasn’t a nice person either, but at least she didn’t act like that just for fun but to survive.
There was a plot like with a supporting character that I thought would have a bigger impact, but it was closed in such a rushed and unsatisfying way for me, but that made perfect sense with how rich people would deal with that problem.
The dynamics between the characters became weirder and weirder during the last third leading to an ending that still managed to deliver some shocking moments.
The audiobook was fantastic. Both narrators did a great job but I especially liked how Karissa Vacker managed to capture Lyla’s entitled personality. She’s fast becoming one of my favorite narrators!
If you want a dark, disturbing and over the top story with some pretty twisted and evil characters, Good Rich People is your book!
