REVIEW
RATING: ⭐⭐⭐💫
I had never read a Hank Phillippi Ryan book before but I decided to give this one a go after seeing it all over Bookstagram.
Lily Atwood has it all: an 8 years old daughter she adores and a job as a reporter that has given her fame, fortunes, Emmys and 58k Instagram followers (yeah, we’re told several times!). Do you know what else she has? A big old secret from her past that could dynamite her “perfect” public image and an anonymous source willing to reveal it. How much will she risk to keep her perfect life?
I listened to the audiobook and I flew through it. Angela Dawe did a fantastic job conveying the different characters’ emotions.
It was a bit hard for me to empathize with Lily. At times she seemed more worried with her public image than with her personal issues. Greer, her producer, talked a lot about being happy for Lily’s success but her inner voice distilled quite a bit of resentment, so I found her character much more interesting. The one I really felt for was Cassie. Without going into spoilers I’ll just say that what happened to her was absolutely heartbreaking and I hated to see how she was taken advantage of just because of her young age and lack of an immediate support system.
When I thought the story was going in a direction, a twist changed everything, leaving me dumbfounded. Then it happened again. And again. And again. I lost count of the number of twists I didn’t see coming.
The ending was completely unexpected and although it had some details not truly believable, it brought and emotional element that wrapped up the story nicely.
