REVIEW
RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫
I had really high expectations put into Rock Paper Scissors, especially after reading the reviews of several trusted friends and I’m delighted to say they were absolutely right!
I adored the setting of the story, an old chapel turned guest house in the Scottish Highlands. Did I mentioned there was a snowstorm? My favorite! Add two very unreliable narrators and you have all the ingredients for this to be a perfect read.
Adam and Amelia were not particularly likeable but were both really interesting. Adam’s prosopagnosia was such an interesting element to add. The fact he could not recognize faces, including his wife’s, added to the general creepiness of the story.
The story is told through several POVs and jumping back from present to past in the form of undelivered letters his wife wrote to Adam each year on their anniversary, throughout which we learn about the facts of their marriage.
The atmosphere was tense from the very beginning and the feeling of foreboding increased as the story progressed.
When the twist came I was so in I actually shouted “WHAT??!!”. It made such perfect sense!
I listened to the audiobook version because one of the narrators was Stephanie Racine, one of my favorite narrators ever. Both narrators did such an amazing job in bringing these characters to life. It took me several days to finish it but that was in no way a reflection of the quality of the story. It was only that life happened, but in normal circumstances I would have binged it so good it was.
Another win for Ms. Feeney. I’m sure that if you decide to play this game of Rock Paper Scissors you will not regret it.
Yes! So glad you loved it too. Right? Snowstorms are the best. Fantastic review Javi!!
